Creating Text on a Path Illustrator CS

by Gary White

Text on a path can be used in many different applications. You can also do it in one program and transfer it to another, like with a PDF converter. Below you will find an instance of how to make text follow a path. We will be using Illustrator CS otherwise known as Illustrator 11

Text on an oval, ellipse, or circle

In the tool pallet choose the ellipse tool. If the rectangle is showing click on the rectangle icon and hold until the other tools expand. Slide your curser over to the oval or ellipse and click. Tip: Notice in the lower right hand corner there is a small black arrow. When you see an arrow in the corner of any tool box icon it means there are other tools under that can be accessed my clicking and holding over the icon.

Draw an elipse by clicking on the canvas and dragging. Tip: If you would prefer a perfect circle hold the shift key while dragging.

Click and hold on the text tool icon until the other tools appear. Select the "Type on a Path Tool".

With the "Type on a Path Tool" click directly on the edge of the elipse. If you clicked in the correct spot the curser will begin to blink on the path.

Begin to type your text. When you have finished typing the text highlight the text. To Highlight click and hold at one end of the text and drag across the text. To access the character pallet hold the control key while clicking T. Change the font and point size of the text.

Click on handle and drag text to the position you would like it in.

Click in any white area of the canvas to deselect the text. Your text on a path is complete.
