Heat Exchangers

Heat transfer has multiple meanings in current industrial and commercial applications, explains David Jenkins Jr, regional sales manager of Markin Tubing. However, the basic conduit for exothermic or endothermic radiation is the tubing or pipe that carries the fluid, which meets the applicable production standard.

According to Markin Tubing, 2004 was a low point in the industry but this area appears to be experiencing an increased demand in North America judging by the first quarter of 2005. As the manufacturers of heat transfer components increase their usage of alloy, stainless and carbon steel pipe and tubing, it is crucial that they seek out reliable suppliers. Communication concerning a user's application and the understanding of performance requirements is critical to the successful supply of material. With the current lack of seamless product availability, builders can complete projects faster and with a lower budget if the application allows the use of welded material.

The wall thickness may also be a critical characteristic in order for the heat exchanger system to function properly. Both the ASTM and ASME standards place the responsibility for determination of the product's minimum wall thickness on the purchaser. Quotation requests and purchase orders should specifically address whether the required wall thickness is the minimum or of an average value.

Markin Tubing moved into the production of heat exchanger and light wall boiler tube in early 2004 with the commissioning of a tube mill expressly designed for these products. A new tube mill with high frequency welder and annealer, bright inert atmosphere cooling and accurate cut to length capability has been regularly producing 5/8" and larger low carbon steel products meeting ASTM A-214, A-178 and ASME SA-214.

In addition, the company's seven other tube mills produce low carbon steel welded tubing to several specifications, including SAE J-356, SAE J-526, and ASTM A513 type 2. The company flash copper plate and produce Galfan coated products for a variety of applications in addition to plain carbon steel capabilities. For tubes that have to be finned or require installation of an internal jacket tube, it is necessary that the supplier maintain the straightness integrity off the tube mill and during subsequent material handling. This is especially important when the end user processes the tube on automated machinery.

Clean chamfered or deburred tube ends for subsequent expansion are to be expected, but there is no industry recognized standard. In place of an industry standard, Markin Tubing provides this service to meet individual user needs.

Markin Tubing has been involved in producing the highest quality steel tubing for the heat transfer (refrigeration) and automotive industries for over 46 years. Sizes currently available are 3/16" OD x 0.028" wall thickness to 1.5" OD x 0.083” wall thickness. Markin – an ISO TS16949 and 14001-registered company – operates mills that produce proven high quality pressure tubing
