Galfan® Coatings & Corrosion Resistance Coatings
Galfan® is a hot-dipped galvanizing process using a eutectic alloy of 95% Zinc and 5% Aluminum plus a trace of mischmetal (rare earth elements) [per ASTM B750] for extended corrosion resistance without the spangle typically associated with straight zinc galvanizing. When combined with either an aluminum-rich epoxy or black epoxy coating, corrosion resistance is extended even longer. The duplex coating that Markin Tubing applies to our Galfan® tubing has synergistic characteristics so that when applied together, corrosion-resistance jumps to 3000+ hours or double the sum of each coating alone.
Markin Tubing’s Galfan® with aluminum-rich or black epoxy coatings can handle anything the road can throw at it including gravel and road spray. Applications include power steering, breather tubes, fuel systems, HVAC and side airbags. Galfan® combined with the epoxy coating over the tubes outside surface may provide a cost effective replacement to stainless steel tubing in applications requiring 3000+ hours of corrosion resistance.
Galfan® provides improved formability compared to regular galvanizing. Heavily formed components will remain free of cracks and micro-cracks, providing further enhanced corrosion resistance when compared to similarly formed parts produced from galvanized tubing.
The current epoxy coatings that Markin Tubing now supplies are more environmentally friendly with the elimination of (hexavalent and trivalent) chromium. This has been accomplished without sacrificing corrosion resistance.
All of Markin Tubing’s Galfan® and epoxy-coated tubing is produced inline with the tube mill and annealing process, providing consistent coating weights from start to finish of each run.
Galfan® -coated tubing is available in diameters from 3/16” (4.76mm) to ¾” (19.05mm) with wall thickness’ ranging from .028” (.71mm) to .049” (1.25mm). Tubing is coated to the following specifications: Chrysler PS-8688, Ford ESA M1A270-A and GM-124M. Manufacturing to custom specification is available upon request.
